The Campbell Apartment

The Campbell Apartment, one of New York City's most famous bars, is the setting for Neal's meeting with Matthew Keller in Chapter 5 of The Mirror. Neal mentions the bar as being a favorite of his former boss, Vincent Adler. Vincent Adler, the corrupt CEO of a hedge fund, and Matthew Keller, a thief, were the two principal villains in the TV show White Collar. Their storylines didn't cross in canon, but in The Mirror Peter is suspicious of a connection. Later events in the story will determine whether or not he's right.

In the second season episode "Forging Bonds," Neal had several flashback scenes with Adler in his office. It was one of the most elaborate sets of the series, with wood paneling, an antique brass armillary, and an elaborately carved Tudor ceiling. Adler would have appreciated the opulence of the Campbell Apartment, located in a corner of Grand Central Terminal. In the 1920s it was the office of financier John Campbell. He had commissioned an architect to transform the vast space into a medieval Florentine palace, complete with carved plaster-of-Paris ceiling and leaded glass windows. It featured a second-floor musicians gallery with a mahogany carved balcony and an immense stone fireplace that contained a steel safe in its interior. Although called an office, the chamber is on a grand scale. Campbell outfitted it with a pipe organ and piano and held private recitals there.

The apartment was restored in 1999, with the walls, ceiling, fireplace and safe all original to Campbell's time. A new bar was built to match the balcony and the doors opened to the public as a public bar and cocktail lounge.
