Stress Lines

Like White Collar, Supernatural is known for its season-spanning arcs. For Dean and Sam, the plots are particularly angsty. One season, Dean worries about Sam being haunted by the Yellow-eyed Demon. During another season, Sam stresses about Dean only having a year to live after having made a pact with a crossroads demon. No sooner is one crisis resolved than another one pops up, such as the season Sam didn't have a soul for a year. Talk about complications!

Warning for minor spoilers to Dark Rabbit

In Dark Rabbit, I decided to create a double-dip version for Neal and Peter where both men have good reason to fret about each other.

Peter is concerned that Neal hasn't fully recovered from a psychological trauma inflicted upon him in my previous story. When Neal wants to go down to Shepherdstown to check on his cousin, Peter fabricates an excuse to go with him. He uses the justification that it's to evaluate whether Neal's ready for fieldwork, but we know the real reason is that he's worried about Neal. For his part, Neal is still uneasy that Peter is upset because of the secrets he kept. He's determined to show Peter that he's reformed. When Peter believes he spotted the demon Crowley on the sleepy streets of Shepherdstown, Neal freaks out that he's the cause. The strain Peter's been under from worrying about Neal's issues has driven him to the point that he's seeing monsters when they're not there.

Peter has a nearly identical reaction when Neal suspects a supernatural cause for Angela's atypical behavior. Has Neal been associating with the Winchesters too much? Is a supernatural cause his new default answer for whatever problem he finds?

Overarching their concern for each other is their worry about Angela. Once they learn Lutar is a pure-blood vampire, Neal tries to shield both her and her boyfriend while Peter has the additional worry of not letting Neal become a victim as well.

Surely that's enough angst for any one story, but this is no milk-chocolate rabbit. In this bittersweet dark rabbit of a tale, Peter and Neal will soon have a new source of stress. Nor will Dean and Sam be left high and dry.
