Genevieve Cogman's marvelous series The Invisible Library is a natural for crossovers. The Librarian heroine Irene Winters and her shapeshifting dragon assistant Kai are constantly on the prowl for rare books that could destabilize worlds. Their assignments stretch across a universe of alternate worlds. Speaking from personal experience, stopovers in a favorite fandom are often too tempting to resist.
Lately I've been reading a superlative crossover series called The Invisible Files by EllianaDunla where Irene and Kai travel to the world of Harry Dresden in The Dresden Files. The stories sound so authentic, it's easy to believe Genevieve Cogman and Jim Butcher teamed up to write them. For those unfamiliar with one—or both—fandoms, the writer provides an excellent introduction to the casts.
Readers of my stories know that I also couldn't resist a crossover. Characters from Tales from the Library are now part of my Arkham Files series. The process has been gradual. I first had the paths of the two senior librarians—Coppelia and Lavinia—intersect. Later Irene and Kai visited Arkham (A Woman in Violet).
Tales from the Library takes place between the first two canon stories. Kai and Irene realize they're drawn to each other, but romantic sparks are reduced what-ifs and pining—so much pining! And, honestly, a future together is decidedly murky. Kai as a royal dragon is an immortal while Irene ages at the normal rate of speed when she's not within the confines of the Library. Kai's status and the huge lifespan difference are bound to create immense challenges down the road. Are there any possible solutions? That's one of the questions I tackle in my latest Tales from the Library story, Valley of the Sorcerer, where Gothic novels have suddenly crossed into the reality of Vales' world. A few Arkham friends drop in as well.
