Dante "Mozzie" Atwood, Karl Jansky Professor of Astrophysics

When Mozzie designed his character for Arkham Files, he wasn't interested in a slight makeover. He demanded a transformation. An astrophysicist with the intelligence of Albert Einstein and the looks of Viggo Mortensen was the profile he presented to Diana. She compromised and gave him part of what he wanted.

Diana is intrigued by the idea of creating a scientific explanation for the world of the Cthulhu Mythos. Mozzie is the standard-bearer of that vision. His character is a cosmologist whose focus is the theoretical structure of the universe. His teaching load is light, because, like Einstein, he primarily engages in "thought experiments." In designing his character, Mozzie usurped theories on superstrings, branes, and M-theory from the best minds in cosmology and astrophysics.

Mozzie is not simply a superstar in the field of cosmology. He also occupies a named chair at Miskatonic University. Karl Jansky was one of the founding figures in radio astronomy. In 1931 he discovered radio waves coming from our galaxy. Radio waves are an important tool for SETI, the organization which is searching for extraterrestrial life. Mozzie, who is a member of SETI, recommended that his character should hold Jansky's chair.

Mozzie has an office on the top floor of the Derleth Hall of Science on the Miskatonic University campus. The building has a rooftop observatory and Mozzie's office is just beneath it. The university granted him permission to install a private staircase leading from his office to the rooftop.

Although Mozzie's profession is much more elevated than in Caffrey Conversation, in many other respects he remains our same beloved, flamboyant personality. He still labels Peter a "suit." In Arkham Files, it's because Peter wears a suit when he teaches. Mozzie's trademark look is an old tweed jacket, turtleneck, and corduroy pants. He is an oenophile and connoisseur of fine cuisine. Diana granted him his wish of not being lactose intolerant in the series, so he can enjoy cheese while savoring his wine.

Mozzie made his debut in White Collar by misquoting a line written by Allen Ginsberg. In Arkham Files, he quotes Ginsberg again and this time gets it right. Ginsberg is 49 in 1975. He's a leading figure of the Beat Generation and espouses many of the same beliefs as Mozzie.
