When characters get out of hand

I'm back from the writers retreat. I'm full of ideas for my novel. I wrote part of a new scene yesterday that involved a fair amount of world building. I'm totally focused. Except...

Last night the Caffrey Conversation AU characters popped up. You've been reading a lot of Jane Austen-inspired books recently, they say.

Me: That's right. I've finished Pride by Ibi Zoboi, and now I'm starting Unmarriageable by Soniah Kamal.

Characters: Plus you watched Bride and Prejudice during the retreat. We want a turn.

Me: ??

Characters: We want our own Pride and Prejudice variation.

Me: I gave Neal the alias Darcy in "By the Book," remember?

Characters: We want a real Pride and Prejudice plot, not an off-hand reference.

Me: Have you spoken to Silbrith about this?

Characters: She's busy. You're the one reading Pride and Prejudice variations.

Me: How on earth would this possibly fit into the timeline Silbrith and I created at our retreat?

Characters: Dream sequence. It's all in Neal's head. Silbrith probably has a scene where he's running a fever or drugged or something, right? You love doing stuff like that to Neal.

Me: You think a Pride and Prejudice plot could fit into a dream sequence?

Characters: ** puppy dog eyes **

Me: Let me guess. Neal is Darcy, and Sara is Lizzy?

Characters: Neal is Lizzy, Sara is Darcy, Henry is Jane, Eric is Bingley, Jones & Diana & Travis are the other sisters, and Peter & El are Mr. & Mrs. Bennet, and Mozzie is Charlotte, and Kramer is Lady Catherine, and Tricia is Aunt Gardiner unless Noelle & Joe are aunt & uncle Gardiner, and...

Me: Please. Slow down. Do you seriously think that's going to work? No, don't answer that. Is it safe to say this is set in the modern day, and not Regency England?

El: Well, I wouldn't mind a Regency costume.

Peter: Modern day. Definitely modern day.

Me: Who would be Collins and Wickham?

Characters: Kate! Adler! Klaus! Kramer!

Me: Perhaps it's time to seek professional help about these voices in my head.

  1. The characters in Crossed Lines and Arkham Files enthusiastically add their support for a Caffrey Pride and Prejudice. Electra thinks she'd make a smashing Wickham. Lavinia is convinced she'd play Lady Catherine to perfection, and Crowley sees great potential in the Collins role.

    1. That's just... wow. I'm torn between congratulating you on excellent suggestions, or accusing you of making things worse.
