Worldbuilding: Tirelia

Tirelia is the third exoplanet to join the Arkham Files universe. Like Celaeno and Merope, its roots can be traced to the Cthulhu Mythos. H.P. Lovecraft created a world called the Dreamlands that could be accessed through one's dreams. In Arkham Files, that dream has become a physical world. I christened it Tirelia.

Many of Lovecraft's most beautiful fantasies take place in the Dreamlands. In The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath, Lovecraft paints a detailed picture of its geography and inhabitants. His creation was expanded by later authors, and detailed maps such as the one below were drawn based on the descriptions.

Neal first visited Tirelia in Visions from Beyond when he was forcibly ejected onto the frozen plateau of Leng. In The Locked Room, he and Peter were treated to another view of the plateau, this time from afar. They also had their first glimpse of the giant horse-like birds called shantaks that are known to circle above the monastery of ice.

In Time Crystals, they'll be able to visit a couple of cities. They'll also travel to Kadath Mountain. In The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath, Randolph Carter seeks the home of gods living atop Kadath in order to make a request. In my story, Neal and Peter are on a quest to recover the armillary sphere.

Tirelia contains many regions which they will not have the time to explore, including fabulous cities, the zoogs' Enchanted Wood and a vast underworld where dwell many of the creatures who have appeared in earlier stories, such as ghasts and gugs. Mozzie would like to visit Ulthar, the city where no cat may be killed, in a future story. Mysterious Dylath-Leen with its sinister rubies and the ruins of Sarkomand also beckon.
