Library Acquisition: Olmstead Manor

Olmstead Manor is the fourth story in Tales from the Library, a series based on The Invisible Library by Genevieve Cogman. As Irene and Kai continue their hunt for Count Lecerf, a rogue Fae, Kai is forced to disclose an incident from his past which could impact his and Irene's relationship.

In Cogman's intricately woven mysteries, so far she's spent little time on the personal mysteries swirling around Irene and Kai. In the first five novels, there are only a few snippets about their lives before they joined the Library. I expect at some time she will fill in their backstory, at which point my stories may become decidedly alternate universe.

Kai has some similarities to White Collar's Neal Caffrey. Both arrived on the scene with a mysterious past and have mentors who are very curious about them. In Neal's case, Peter tries to understand why a man who is gifted with so many talents chose the life of a thief and con man. When he discovers Neal never attended college and didn't even graduate from high school, he is even more perplexed. Kai is likewise an enigma to Irene. She knows very little about the nature of dragons and their culture. She suspects he's of royal blood and wonders how he was allowed to enter the Library. Her relationship with her assistant is complicated by their growing attachment. In Caffrey Conversation, Peter and Neal develop a father-son relationship. In Tales from the Library, Irene and Kai are frustrated by a series of hurdles from becoming intimate, some of which are of their own making.
