Warning for spoilers to the earlier stories in the series
Miskatonic University is on winter break with classes scheduled to resume in mid-January. Neal is still experiencing the after-effects of having been merged with his eight-year-old self. He returned to the present time with his childhood memories restored at the end of Time Crystals. Sara is now working on a temporary assignment for the International Herald Tribune in London. She flew to Arkham to spend Christmas with Neal but must rejoin her investigative team in Edinburgh on the 27th. Neal and other members of his group will leave for Egypt the next day.
Neal has not seen Henry since he was a child. So far, his efforts to contact him have been unsuccessful, but that situation will change by the end of the story.
Christmas has a special significance for Neal. A year ago, his girlfriend Kate visited him in Oxford for the winter holiday. He proposed to her on December 27. Two days later, she was killed in a plane crash when she was en route to join her advisor Peter Gilman on a dig. Neal and Kate had dated for several years in college. Sara was one of their close friends. She'd known this Christmas would be a difficult one for Neal. Now it will be even more so because of the events in Time Crystals.
