Silent Planet is the first Caffrey Conversation story to be set in 2006. Neal has now worked at the FBI for over two years. This is also his second year at Columbia University. The story begins in mid-January, which is the first week of classes at Columbia University. Over the winter holiday, Neal and Sara revealed they'd been dating in secret for several months. Their relationship is no longer concealed, but dating is still a problem. Sara works as an investigator for the insurance company Sterling-Bosch and is currently working in London. She's applied for a transfer back to the States but has been told to not expect anything for at least six months.
Featured in this story are two of Neal's friends from Columbia—Richard Carlisle and Aidan Phillips. Both are grad students in visual arts. Aidan works as a programmer for a cybersecurity firm. Richard is a concept artist with Scima Gameworks, a video game publisher.
For the past year, Diana has been writing a series of fanfics called Arkham Files. The profiler on the Mansfeld case, Tricia Wiese, devised the strategy because of Rolf Mansfeld's fascination with the horror-fiction writer H.P. Lovecraft. Even though Rolf is now a prisoner, Tricia recommended continuing the stories, especially in light of the coded message Diana received in December from an unknown reader. The code was the same as was used earlier in the year presumably by Rolf, and was decrypted to read: "Miss me?"
The Arkham Round Table writing group meets in June's dining room. The tradition started due to Mozzie's participation. Mozzie has become friends with the White Collar team but still avoids contamination with their office building. Mozzie is now recognized as co-writer in the series. June serves as beta for the group. Other members of the Round Table are Diana, Tricia, Jones, and Elizabeth. Their ranks are about to be increased with an additional member. Any guesses as to who it might be?
