When Tess finds a basket of large pumpkin-colored eggs at her doorstep on Halloween's Eve, she doesn't realize what she's in for. That's the premise of my latest story, Unintended Consequences. It was written for Wattpad's Halloween Vault 2022.
This is the first story in my new series Ghostnet. The contemporary urban fantasies are set in the fictitious town of Drexford near Boston, Massachusetts. Witches, vampires, werewolves, and other creatures live harmoniously with the town's residents by hiding in plain sight. They used to rely on lore passed down through families, but a few flagrant cases revealed how vulnerable their community is to exposure. To connect with each other, they rely on the ghostnet, a dark network set up by creatures at MIT in the '70s.
In Unintended Consequences, I introduce Tess, a witch who works at a bookstore, and Finn, a vampire who is the owner of a guitar shop. In the world of Ghostnet, witches are able to draw aether from the etheric plane to perform magic. Modern vampires take meds to avoid drinking blood. Their diets are severely restricted. Feeding on humans or other creatures is a crime. Werewolves will be introduced in a later story.
As for what the eggs hatch into, will they be a treat or a trick? I'll let you decide. Starting a new series has a bit of the same feel. Will the ideas turn into little monsters or adorable plot bunnies?
