On the Outside

I was delighted to receive a request for a story in The Invisible Library fandom for the recent Yuletide gift exchange. The requestor asked for a story featuring Lord Silver. In the world of The Invisible Library, Lord Silver is a Fae. He appears human but isn't and has supernatural abilities such as the power to charm others and to travel between worlds.

Lord Silver reminds me of a character you may be more familiar with—Crowley from Supernatural. Both men have minions to do their bidding but no real friends to speak of. They possess a relatively high rank among their fellow creatures, a situation that can easily lead to intense competition, rivalries, and attempts to topple them for their position of power.

In Supernatural, Crowley's isolation is contrasted with the tight bond shared by Dean and Sam Winchester with their fellow hunters, notably Bobby and Ellen. In The Invisible Library, the friendship Irene Winters, her dragon apprentice Kai, and Peregrine Vale have is something Lord Silver can only dream about. But would he? I decided that he would. Like Crowley, he suffers from loneliness even though he may not admit it.

Daydreaming about the journeys Crowley and Lord Silver might make to improve their lot in life is an addictive pleasure. In my Crossed Lines series, Crowley is becoming increasingly close to Dean and Sam Winchester and their girlfriends—the Scoobies. Helping him along this unfamiliar route is Curtis Hagen, the man he possessed and who now likes to think of himself as his bro. Crowley and Neal have also achieved a comfortable relationship, even if Crowley does insist on calling Neal Cheekbones.

In my Yuletide story, On the Outside, Lord Silver isn't as far along. He's just made the acquaintance of Irene, a woman he thought he could easily control. Instead, she outwitted both him and his werewolf minions. He has his manservant Johnson spy on Irene and her associates. He learns that she has become close friends with a dragon prince and a man acknowledged to be London's most brilliant detective. Fae are known to desire what they can't have. How Silver proceeds is the subject of my story.

I wrote On the Outside as a standalone, but it can be read as a prequel to my series Tales from the Library.
