Today I posted my first story of 2023, the Writing Year of the Giraffe. This is a year when Penna and I will stretch our writing necks to capture "raffies," our term for the plot ideas of the year. Tower of Koth is the 14th installment in Arkham Files, a meta series currently written by Mozzie. It's set in the summer of 1976. Ten months have elapsed since Neal met Peter and Elizabeth. He's gone from being a stranger to an honorary member of the family. As this story opens, he and Peter are attempting to assemble a crib. Elizabeth's due date is about two months off. But developments overseas rapidly overtake domestic activities.
Henry has several irons in the fire. At the start of the story, he's in Kyiv, investigating a Soviet connection to the Starry Wisdom cult. In addition to his investigatory work, he's managing the construction of Arkham's first brewpub. His most perplexing challenge is his developing relationship with Eric. Sara has several suggestions on that topic. I'm suspicious that Sara Ellis prompted Mozzie to write about Arkham Sara being a matchmaker in appreciation of Henry's matchmaking efforts in New York City.
Peter is an archaeologist specializing in Neolithic cultures. In Tower of Koth, he gets to explore a possible connection between the Yahgan people of Southern Patagonia and the first alien species to colonize Earth—the Elnath. From previous adventures, he's learned that Neolithic caves often contain wormholes. Will he and Neal find one this time?
New York Mozzie has been quietly cultivating a new thread for his Arkham character and Lavinia. Possible contamination from a world resembling Tolkien's Middle-earth leads them to consider taking drastic steps foreshadowing events to come.
In Zoog Whisperer, Diana Berrigan crafted a second identity for herself as Kirana, a Tirelian who is a member of the Guardians of Kolthra. Kirana makes a return appearance in this story, along with giant penguins, shantaks, and several other creatures.
