Caffrey Conversation: The Red Diamonds

Not long after Diana went to work at Winston-Winslow, she suggested a sting to Sara where they would pretend to be jewel thieves. In Scotch on the Rocks, they wanted to track down a ring of thieves who were targeting high-end jewelry stores. Diana picked the name Red Diamonds for their hypothetical crew because of the jewel's reputation for being the most expensive gemstone. Diana hoped to take advantage of Mozzie's skill with the Jewel Box darkweb to spread rumors of their exploits.

The idea wasn't implemented at the time, but Diana didn't give up on it. Flash-forward about six months. Museums are discovering that some of the most prized historical gemstones in their collections have been replaced by forgeries. The issue first surfaced when Neal realized that the McNally Solitaire had been stolen from an Edinburgh museum. Although Diana and Sara captured the jewel thieves they'd initially targeted, the identity of their new quarry is a mystery.

Diana's idea is just one of the dangling threads that I pick up in the tales of the Red Diamonds. Another dangling thread will also be featured in the first story, Dances with Dinosaurs, coming your way on May 23. I'll have more about it in a later post.
