Novel Progress: Welcome to Zach's home

Since the last time I posted about the novel I call "Prime," I've exceeded my goal of writing 12,000 words in July's Camp NaNoWriMo. At the end of the camp, participants received an invitation to take a set of online writing courses to prepare for November's NaNoWriMo. Last week I completed Coursera's "Creative Writing: The Craft of Style" and now I'm working on the second course. Rather than posting dry updates about how the classes and writing are going, I thought it would be more fun to post a few of the things I'm writing for the courses. This time, I invite you to see the main character's home through the eyes of a visitor.

The assignment: to write a brief description, appealing to all of the reader's senses. I hope you like it!

The first thing Navir noticed when he entered the house was the abundance of plants. With the evening light spilling through the glass front wall of the geodesic dome, there was a sense of entering a greenhouse that happened to have furniture in it. Every table top hosted at least one exotic plant in a brown earthenware pot, and several hanging planters above the sofa had delicate vines climbing up the wires and across the ceiling to cascade down near the front windows. Pulled back at the moment to let in the light, the vines looked like they could serve as a curtain for shade or privacy. The rainbow coloring of their leaves indicated that most of these plants were native to the planet, rather than being varieties seeded during the terraforming of Arden’s main continent.

Next he noticed the plants were shivering, their leaves rustling so loudly it sounded like being in a forest on a windy day. Their movement caused a breeze, carrying the rich scent of peat moss and a hint of the herbs thriving in the kitchen area. He could almost taste the basil, and thought longingly of the meals he could cook if he lived here.

He sat on the dark wood floor next to the largest plant, whose branches reached up toward the skylight. Navir ran a hand along the ruffled edge of a smooth, waxy leaf in what he’d been told was a soothing gesture. The rustling slowed, and the smaller plants followed its lead.
