When a Shapeshifter Can No Longer Shapeshift

Neal derives a sense of identity from what seems to be a non-sequitur, namely his ability to shapeshift. He is a superb con artist because, like an actor, he can immerse himself in a role and transform himself into another person. What would happen if he lost that ability?

Warning for spoilers for the Caffrey Conversation series

Neal faces that dilemma in Nocturne in Black and Gold. His arch-foe Rolf Mansfeld has used virtual reality programming to modify Neal's behavior. Although the procedure was stopped before the desired effect was reached, it has an unintended effect that could work to Rolf's advantage.

Now Neal hears multiple voices in his head—Klaus, the old Neal who idolized Klaus as a role model and mentor, and his current self. He is unable to sort through the inner chaos to mask himself from others.

Neal fears his emotions are easily read not only by Peter but the other team members. He's lost control over his life. His situation is similar to that of an actor who wakes up to find his acting skills have deserted him. Although Peter might argue that it's not a bad thing to be more transparent, Neal would vehemently disagree.

Fortunately, help is on the way. Tricia's lined up a psychologist who's a specialist in the technique used on Neal. Henry is on his way back to New York. And someone else is on a return flight who is a master of shapeshifting as well as hearing many voices inside his head—Mozzie. Hold on, Neal, they're coming! And yes, that's a reference to "Hold On, I'm Coming" by Sam and Dave. It was used in the pilot episode of White Collar. Below is one of my favorite fanvids. In Caffrey Disclosure, Neal referenced the song to send a message to Angela and Henry that help was on the way. It's time for Henry to return the favor.
