Backdrop to Fretwork

On December 9, I posted the latest addition to my Six-Crossed Knot series: Fretwork. The story spans fifteen years in the mid-eighteenth century. In England, this is the Georgian era. The arts were flourishing and private clubs proliferated throughout London. In Fretwork, I mention two clubs—Scriblerus and the Rose and Crown. Both are historical. The Rose and Crown Club was for artists and art connoisseurs. It was formed in 1704 and continued till 1745. The Scriblerus Club was much more famous. The group of writers included such notables as Alexander Pope, Jonathan Swift, and John Gay.

Over in France, Louis XV is on the throne. Voltaire and Emilie du Chatelet are featured in the story, as well as one of the most notorious libertines in French history—the Duke de Richelieu. Emilie du Chatelet isn't as famous as Voltaire but she should be. She was a mathematician and scientist as well as a prolific author. She had an open marriage with numerous lovers, including the Duke de Richelieu and Voltaire. Among her numerous publications are works in support of women's education and the nature of happiness. Diana Bishop would have loved to meet her. Perhaps someday she can. She's timewalked before. She may need to again!

This story marks a milestone for Jack and Leonard. Up to now, Freyja and Philippe are the only de Clermonts who are aware of who they are. That circle will shortly expand to include Ysabeau de Clermont, Philippe's wife.
