Caffrey Conversation: The 2006 Road Map

Silent Planet is the first Caffrey Conversation story to be set in 2006. The story is not very long, but it contains several road signs for Neal Caffrey and his friends that they'd be wise to pay attention to. Some alert to speed bumps while a few have flashing lights, indicating danger ahead.

Neal and Sara begin the year in an unsatisfactory situation. Sara continues to work in London, and their dates are restricted to phone calls. Already they're making plans for the next reunion. How many obstacles will they encounter? Will they still be a couple by the end of the year? Mud splatters have obscured many of the road signs, making any prediction problematic.

Neal and Henry's friendship is on more solid ground. At the end of Italian Masquerade, they made a pact to create CA, a Conspirators Anonymous club where they'd help each other overcome their natural inclinations to shield others by keeping secrets. So far, it seems to be working, at least for Neal, Henry, Sara, and Eric. But what about Peter? He knows about the club and has offered to be their coach. Neal laughingly accepted, but so far there haven't been any boot camps. Will Neal be completely open with Peter or will he discover new reasons to shield him? The number of detour signs indicates that the club may face unexpected hazards.

The Mansfeld brothers are both behind bars at the start of the year, but Bureau profiler Tricia Wiese hasn't closed the file on them. She suspects Rolf could have a silent partner. If she's correct, that could be a game-changer. Rolf has reverted to leaving coded comments to Diana's fanfics. Is he simply frustrated over his confinement or is something else at play? Rolf has never been confirmed to be the author of the messages. Several cracks in the pavement warn of possible sinkholes.

Mozzie's road map is a convoluted one. Conflicting forces pull him in different directions as witnessed in Chapter 1 of Silent Planet. Will the ultimate shadow lurker be able to maintain his anonymity as more and more of his initiatives are in the public arena? He's been able to maintain a low profile in the organic honey business thanks to Billy Feng. But his interest in scriptwriting could prove especially challenging.

A cryptic road sign for Peter and El appears in Chapter 2 of Silent Planet. That will be a discussion topic for next week's post.
